The majority of our members are professional firefighters and first responders. We have all been on scene during a house fire and witnessed families watching their lives literally going up in flames. We put the fire out, slap each other on the back and go back to the fire house so we can clean our gear and get ready for the next call. But what happens to the family? The next few days are a whirlwind of telephone calls, insurance companies and a full spectrum of emotions. As a charity, we felt like we could do more- should do more, to support our community.

During this same time period, SVVFC was contacted by a private citizen who wanted to make a sizeable donation on her husband's behalf. The woman explained that her husband had passed some months before due to a catastrophic cardiac event, while hiking in Sedona. Although she was devastated, the first responders had made such an impression, the woman wanted her donation to go to the firefighters charity- SVVFC. Much to this citizen's delight, it was this donation that we used to start what has become the Emergency Relief Program.

Today, the Emergency Relief Program has grown to provide assistance in a multitude of circumstances. First and foremost we provide 72 hours of support for families displaced by structure fires in the Sedona-Verde Valley area. Through affinity relationships in the community, we provide 72 hours of hotel stays, food vouchers and gift cards at local stores to purchase food and clothing. Depending on specific needs we can initiate impromptu clothing and food drives for the effected families. Secondly, we support our own. There are times when everyone needs a hand. The Emergency Relief Program helps local first responders, to include fire, police, and EMS professionals in their time of need. Finally, and perhaps the most somber, in the event of a line-of-duty death (LODD) we provide financial support to the surviving family members.

As you can see, the Emergency Relief Program has come along way. Birthed from a private donation, supported by member contributions from local first responders and grown into what you see today by generous donations from business owners and persons like you!
